Religious Education

We teach religion individually as well as integrating it across all other Key Learning Areas. Religion lessons are built around the school-based curriculum, which complements the Parish Sacramental Program.

"It is recognised that the proper place for catechises is the family helped by other Christian communities, especially the local parish. But the importance and need for catechetical instruction in Catholic schools cannot be sufficiently emphasised. Here young people are helped to grow towards maturity in faith." The Catholic School P.40

This is how faith is lived at OLSS

At Our Lady Star of the Sea, Religious Education is central to who we are as a Catholic school community. Students are supported to develop a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith, the message of Jesus and the values that guide how we learn, serve and care for one another.

Religious Education is taught through the Catholic Schools Broken Bay curriculum and is also woven through everyday school life. Students learn about scripture, prayer, liturgy, Catholic traditions, social justice and what it means to live with compassion, respect and hope.

Faith in Action

At OLSS, students are encouraged to put their faith into action through service, leadership and care for others. These experiences help children understand that faith is not only something we learn about, but something we live each day.

Students participate in initiatives such as:

  • Visiting a local nursing home each term
  • Food drives each semester to support local charities
  • Blanket appeals for those in need
  • A school Sleepout to raise awareness of homelessness
  • Social justice and service opportunities connected to the needs of our local community

Prayer, Liturgy and Celebration

Prayer and liturgy are important parts of school life at OLSS. Throughout the year, students participate in celebrations and reflections that help them grow in faith and connect as a school community.

These include:

  • St Patrick’s Day Assembly
  • Lent and Advent liturgies
  • Easter celebrations
  • Rosary Day
  • Jack Costa Awards
  • ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day commemorations
  • Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Grandparents’ Day celebrations
  • Christmas Concert

Parish and Sacramental Life

OLSS works in partnership with families and the parish to support children in their faith journey. Students participate in grade Masses on Saturday evenings, and altar serving training is offered during school time for students who would like to serve more actively in parish life.

Our Religious Education program also complements the Parish Sacramental Program, supporting families as children prepare for important moments in their faith formation.

Student Leadership and Faith Formation

Students are given opportunities to deepen their faith, develop leadership skills and share the message of Jesus with others.

In 2026, Year 6 students will take part in the Bright Star Project, with a Junior Youth Ministry Team inducted to meet weekly. This team will explore ways to implement peer-to-peer support and share the message of Jesus across the school community. The project is designed for students who want to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of their faith and help bring that faith to life for others.

Selected students are also supported through programs such as Seasons for Growth, which helps children navigate change, grief and loss with care, compassion and hope.
